With a population of approximately 300,000, Marion County Florida is among one of the three fastest growing areas in the United States.

When Florida was secured by the United States Government in 1821, scouts were sent to survey the peninsula. What they found was a vast population of Seminole and Timucuan Indians. The Timucuan Indians in the area of Marion County worshiped the sun and so Marion County became known as the "Kingdom of the Sun".

Up to 1844, the county was still a part of Alachua, Mosquito (Orange) and Hillsborough counties. On March 25, 1844, the formation of Marion County was signed into law.

Soon after, a search began to choose a new, permanent county seat to replace the temporary one at Fort King.

And in 1846 a resolution was passed by the county commission, declaring that the county seat of Marion County would be known as Ocala.

In the late 1930's the first horse farm in Ocala Florida was established, belonging to Carl G. Rose. The Paddock Mall and Central Florida Community College now stand on its once green pastures.

An Ocala horse named “Needles” changed everything when in the 1950s he became the first triple crown winner from Ocala Florida. The thoroughbred community began to take notice of Ocala and Marion County, with its nutrient rich grazing soil and warn climate Marion County became the perfect location for horse and livestock breeding.

Credibility quickly grew and more horse farms such as the famous Ocala Stud were established. In short order Ocala Stud became the leading commercial breeding horse farm in the nation. Ocala Florida is now considered one of the equestrian capitols of the United States with over 1,200 horse farms in Marion County.
Today the area of Marion County is one of the most desirable places to live in Florida. Palatial estates and horse farms surrounded by rolling-meadows and pastures are just minutes away from the city.

The famous Silver Springs, Lake Weir, the Rainbow River, and the Withlacoochee River offer excellent water recreation, fishing, swimming, canoeing and kayaking year round.

And the weather was made for golfing in Marion County, nearly two dozen area golf courses offer a clear blue sky on most days.
